I’ve been wanting to try some recipes from Gousto for a long time, so it’s safe to say that I was a bit excited (okay, understatement) about receiving my box! I was like a child at Christmas and when I found out that I could get it delivered within a few days, I happily selected the first date of delivery. Despite very much looking forward to trying Gousto for the first time, I did have some preconceptions on the whole experience.
I thought that I wouldn’t have much choice for our meals, that they wouldn’t necessarily be to my liking (I worried that it’d be ‘posh’) and the serving sizes wouldn’t be that great – I love my food and one thing that dictates what food I buy is how much I think I’ll be given!
Placing an Order
When it came to customising my box, I was pleasantly surprised with how many options I had, not only were there meals to choose from that I already knew I liked but there was an array of meals that I’ve never tried before and looked lovely! I also noticed that Gousto cater to many different diets such as vegetarian, so it’s definitely worth a look!
Packaging & Delivery
The first thing you notice once your Gousto box has been delivered is how wonderfully it has been packed and with such great care! My recipes included a few breakable items such as eggs, and they came in perfect condition.
You receive your fresh ingredients all contained within a chilled box. Gousto use a special type of wool and ice packs to keep your food items fresh and chilled.
Within your box, you receive handy recipe cards that have been well-written and are extremely easy to follow (with pictures). The food often comes prepped for you, for example, one of my recipes used diced chicken which came pre-diced for me. Perfect for those who don’t have much time for meal preparation.
Value for Money
The ingredients that you get are definitely value for money, at around £5 per serving it isn’t the cheapest food you can buy but you really do get your money’s worth! All of the ingredients are fresh and high quality – Gousto definitely don’t scrimp on the quality of your food (and not on the portion sizes either).
My Tasty Recipes
I decided to choose a classic meal that both me and my partner love and enjoy fairly often, as well as something that we’ve never had and wouldn’t normally cook ourselves or choose in a restaurant.
I picked out: ‘Honey Roasted Ham, Egg & Chips’ and ‘Greek Chicken & Feta Bake’.
My favourite was definitely the honey roasted ham, no surprise there! Both me and my partner said that it was one of the best pieces of ham we’ve had in ages and both demolished our plates. My partner is incredibly fussy when it comes to chips (or any sort of potato) so I was dreading him trying out our recipes, but he cleaned his plate and that says it all. If he finishes a plate that consists of potato, you’ve done good!
The chicken bake was also delicious and I’m so glad I picked it out as it wouldn’t have been something I would normally choose.
Who Would Like Gousto?
I think Gousto is absolutely perfect for anyone who works long hours and doesn’t have a whole lot of time to prep their meals.
Due to the price, it definitely isn’t something that you would have too often, but it is excellent for a treat!
Personally, I don’t think it’s too family-friendly, especially for those with younger children. I have an (almost) three-year-old and I know he probably wouldn’t eat anything from their recipes – he’ll stick to his turkey dinosaurs and spaghetti hoops! Although, children who are a bit older would love it as Gousto offer a wide range of recipes that are family favourites and pub classics.
Both me and my partner have said that we will definitely be purchasing a Gousto box in the future and my mother-in-law is already convinced and she will be placing an order for her first box soon, after coming around for dinner to try out one of the recipes with us.
“Delicious, the nicest chips and gammon I’ve had in ages!” – My partner, as he went up for more kale.
For our family-friendly budget, we wouldn’t be able to order them often but they are perfect for a treat every now and then and something we would enjoy on special occasions.
The box comes with everything you need to make your meals, except for things like salt and oil, but who doesn’t have those in their cupboards?
I was pleased with the packaging and how it’s been designed for people who aren’t always at home for deliveries. If your package is either left with a neighbour or in a safe place (like mine was) then your ingredients will be kept fresh for quite a while, giving you time to get home and unpack them.
